A label tool for Blogger users who've reached the limit

You've just finished a masterpiece of a post (or maybe an everyday mediocre post) at Blogger. You look everything over, fill out all the fields, and hit Publish. You're about to walk away from the computer and spend some time offline with your family or your dog, but then you see an error message--something about a 200 character limit. Depending on the situation, it may not be clear what exactly is being limited. What's going on here?

You've just hit the limit for the length of your labels, that's what. (Blogger calls them labels; elsewhere they are called tags or categories. Tags categorize your posts and help people find blog entries about a topic.) This can happen if you've written about subjects that lend themselves to a variety of keywords, a longer or in-depth post including more items of interest, or if you simply tried to include more tags.

Now you have to either open up a word processor to count the number of characters, or keep deleting labels and trying again until you reach the magic number and the Guardian of the Blogger Labels is placated. That can take a while.

But now there's a better way! Here's a handy free tool for salvaging or squeezing in as many labels as you can and easily editing to get rid of the rest. Just bookmark this page and use it whenever you run up against the label limit and get derailed with an error message. Now you can keep more of your tags (or add more, right up to the limit) while saving time and effort.

It has a live character count, along with a button for removing any extra spaces that come between the labels, such as those inserted by Blogger's auto-complete feature. This saves space and helps you squeeze in a few extra tags. You also get a bigger text area for your editing.

To get started, just copy the labels you entered in the Blogger editor, and paste them in the box here. Then remove spaces and/or whittle down (or add to) your tags as needed, and copy and paste back to the Blogger editor. (You can open this page in a separate browser tab or window to switch back and forth easily from your blog.)

Enjoy!
